Science notebooks allow teachers to assess students' understanding and provide the feedback students need for improving their performance. Science notebooks can be a valuable tool for both teachers and students to use to determine:
- prior knowledge and existing science ideas
- how conceptual understanding is being built
- procedural understanding
- mastery of curriculum goals
- the ability to apply/transfer ideas to new context.
These rubrics are a beginning set of tools teachers may use in assessing notebooks. Additional rubrics and assessment tools will be added to the site over time. These rubrics can be downloaded as Word files and can be modified to meet the specific needs of individual teachers and their classroom context.
